Data Centres APPG Launches Inquiry into UK Growth and Competitiveness
The All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Data Centres has launched a major inquiry examining how Britain can strengthen its position in the increasingly competitive global data centre market.
Entitled Unlocking the UK’s Data Centre Growth Opportunity, the inquiry will investigate whether existing planning, regulatory and infrastructure policies are sufficient to support investment, economic growth and technological innovation.
Three principal areas will be examined: energy infrastructure and international competitiveness; investment, planning and regional growth; and innovation and sustainability.
APPG Chair Chris Curtis MP emphasised the potential for data centres to create skilled employment and deliver lasting economic benefits across the UK’s regions.
Vice-Chair Alison Griffiths MP highlighted the importance of addressing environmental concerns, particularly the substantial energy, water and land requirements associated with expanding artificial intelligence infrastructure.
The inquiry will gather evidence from industry representatives, investors, regulators, local authorities and environmental organisations.
Written submissions closed on 25 September, with oral evidence sessions scheduled between September and November.
A final report, containing policy recommendations designed to strengthen Britain’s competitiveness while ensuring sustainable development, is expected in December 2026.
