Global Health & Security APPG sets out vision for a more equitable global health architecture

The All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Global Health and Security has published proposals for a fairer, simpler and more accountable international health system.

In a new position paper, the group warns that fragmented institutions, unpredictable funding and excessive dependence on wealthy donor countries are undermining global health cooperation.

Chaired by Dr Beccy Cooper MP, the APPG argues that the World Health Organization (WHO) should remain central to international health governance, but with a more focused remit covering disease surveillance, technical standards, pandemic preparedness and coordination.

The recommendations follow parliamentary discussions involving international experts, regional representatives and civil society organisations.

The group advocates greater leadership from developing countries, particularly across Africa, alongside stronger regional institutions and increased representation for communities affected by health inequalities.

It also recommends replacing short-term funding arrangements with sustainable investment in national health systems, while reducing duplication between international organisations.

The APPG urges the UK Government to champion these reforms internationally, using its diplomatic influence and financial contributions to encourage greater transparency, accountability and cooperation.

The proposals emphasise that effective global health security depends upon stronger national systems and genuinely equitable international partnerships.
